Detailed Music Video Analysis, Scouting for Girls

Heartbeat is a song by the Indie-Pop/Rock band, Scouting for Girls released this song on the 7th April 2008 within their self-titled debut album, the single got as far as to peak at rank 10th in the UK charts.
I Choose this song because of it's genre relevance to the genre that my group is doing.

The pop genre is often a featured song at parties; in the majority of pop songs they include some sort of party where the singer is either singing on a stage or walking through the crowd.
In this particular song the band are playing on a stage at a party, throughout the song their are thought beats as with Andrew Goodwin's theory.
The melody of the song is not complex and repeats the same melody quite a few times so that people will recognize it if they hear it. This is to make the song stick into people's head so that it's memorable which could lead to more sales further down the line.

The narrative of the song is about love, which is quite typical of most songs in the music industry.
As the songs develops the visuals displayed on the screen reflect what the lyrics are saying, every time the singer says "Heartbeat"the video shows someone looking at who they fancy and a heart comes out of their chest, and in some cases their crotch for the boys.
Andrew Goodwin's theory talks about the narrative and performance in that which they link into the actual song, in which this song does go by Andrew's theory.

Advert Analysis

The Bess album titled as "FREE THE BEES" is an intriguing advert that stands out.
The album's title is placed in the bottom half of the page, the name of the album is written on a cloth banner which stands out from the rest of the picture to draw your attention to it, this is because the artist waned you to notice the picture but focus on the name of the album so you would know what the album cover looks like for any potential purchases.

At the bottom of the page there is a small part of text stating a few songs which would be featured on the album, the album's release date, website information and the record company which is publishing the album, which is Virgin Records.

The main focus of the picture which takes up more than half of the page is the tree, the tree is shaped on top of another image. The image in the background which the tree has been placed to cover yet show is of a bar; the evidence the i have tried to gather form the photo to support this is that the truck of the tree is a table, and in the middle of the tree their are two tubs of nuts. Further in the background there looks to be a window wich is reflecting the lighting within the establishment and also some of the signs on another window.

The whole bar scene could link into the bands genre as a Rock band and that of being British origin.
As the typical rock band would not past up the opportunity to have a drink unless there was something more pressing to complete and that the band is British; being British partially means getting drunk on a friday night.

Without looking deeper into the picture to see what images have been placed over the background image, we can see a number of other images have been used which may have some, a lot or no relevance to the band or the album.

The biggest images pasted over the background which is on top of the tree are the band themselves.
The six members of the band are all placed at the top of the tree with each playing their respective instruments with the lead singer being at the top with a microphone and his guitar.

The colours used in the advert are white and different shades of red from the background photo.
The red and white colours could again link into their English nationality as those colour are the colours of the English national flag. It could also just be the colours of the place which they have taken the picture as typical night life would include colours such as red, orange, blue, purple and even green.

Digipak Advert analysis, Mumford & Sons "Sigh No More"

The Mumford & Sons 6 side digipak is very simple and is very well represented.

The Mumford & Sons are a Indie/Indie-folk band whose music is typically slow paced and calm.

The front cover of the digipak had the band standing in the window of a clothes shop, the shop it's self looks like an old Victorian street house. this theme could link into the genre of the band, the indie-folk could link into the small villages with a few streets in them and have all of their shops built into their homes.
the colours which they use on the front cover look standard and simple, the shop which the band stands in is white or cream however. this colour can link directly to the band as they ware white clothing in their music video and that colour also seems to be one of the themes of their album.

The back cover of the album is very plain and simple, which seems to be a theme in this digipak.
The copyright information is displayed under the bar-code which is displayed under the song list.
The back cover displays the same colour as the other panes in the digipak; this pane however shows a window which does not look like it has any other meaning other than what it is. This again shows the very plain and simple style of their album.

Digipak Advert analysis, Linkin Park Reanimation.

The Digipak of the album "Reanimation" form Linkin Park, the most common feature of this album is the cartoon robot which is featured on every pane of the digipak.

Each of the panes' has similar background, the background of each pane looks urban and gritty; this features a lot in their music videos and the urban setting is one that linken ark use quite often.
The robot can be see on each pane, and in each pane the robot is carrying a flag; also the robot is seen to have wings of each of the pictures.

The wings could suggest aiming high(ambition) or could relate to the advancement of technology, coupled this with the urban, gritty themed background and the flag baring could relate the conflicts that may take form in the future where the once science fiction actually becomes reality in combat.

Shot Count, Mumford & Sons - The Cave

Mumford & Sons - The Cave, Shot Tally: 113

The opening of the music video has the band arriving onto a beach via mopeds; with their instruments.
The band dismounts and then talk to another group on the beach, the band then proceed to give this group their instruments. During this part there are less than 5 shots.

During the first minute or two of the music video the camera shot changes at the end of each sentence when the song has gotten past it's intro. These Thought beats are purposely placed so that it looks as though the band and the beach band are singing the same song around the same time.
In most cases the lead singer of the band is shown singing the song along with the singer of the beach band. During the chorus of the song every time "I" comes into the song you see on the video on of the band members shouting it at the top of their voice, this could be shown to amplify the emotion but into singing the song.
The theorist Andrew Goodwin, presented the ide of thought beats which are present in music videos.
In this video as stated before, every time the letter "I" is sung a member of the band stands up and is sining that note; every time this is done the camera switches to a different character within the song.

"But I will hold on hope
And I won't let you choke
On the noose around your neck

And I'll find strength in pain
And I will change my ways
I'll know my name as it's called again"

Mumford and Sons are an Indie/Folk Indie group, their videos contain scenes which would relate to common folk. In this song for example they are driving around on mopeds in the country side, which is typically associated with the common folk.
This links into Carol Vernallis' theory as the diegesis of the song fits into the genre of the type of music.
The selection of the band which is playing the instruments of the actual band seems to also fit into the common folk theme of the genre, they seems to be un-unique except their ability to play instruments and the uniform that they wear.
